What an app like Cue→Name actually does

Cue→Name (Objects) is a therapy app built around clear photographs, designed to treat word-finding deficits — a core symptom of aphasia. It offers 500+ photos grouped into three complexity levels, used with clients recovering from aphasia, apraxia, and dementia. A companion app, Cue→Name (Actions), covers over 165 verbs across the same three levels, because action words carry content of their own and help move a person's language from single words toward phrases and full sentences.

Why images, and not words, are the entry point
The mechanism behind this is precise, and it comes down to which parts of the brain a stroke actually damages.

  • Speech production lives mostly in the left hemisphere — specifically Broca's area (motor planning of speech) and Wernicke's area (language comprehension), both usually left-lateralized. A stroke in the left middle cerebral artery territory very often damages exactly this region, which is why aphasia results.
  • Visual object recognition runs on a separate network — the ventral visual stream, running from the occipital lobe into the temporal lobe, sometimes called the "what pathway." This circuitry is largely independent of the speech-production circuitry, and it is frequently spared even when the left frontal/temporal language zones are damaged.
  • Semantic memory — knowing what a "dog" is, what it does, how it feels — is stored more diffusely, distributed across temporal and parietal regions. This store is often more intact than the retrieval pathway that turns a concept into a spoken word.
So in aphasia, the problem usually isn't that the person doesn't know what a dog is. The concept is still there. What's broken is the bridge between concept and spoken output — word retrieval. A photograph activates the intact visual-semantic route directly, bypassing the damaged verbal-retrieval circuitry. The image becomes a scaffold that helps the brain find its way back to the word through a side door, instead of forcing it through the blocked front door.
This is also why the app builds in a cueing hierarchy: the client can try to name the object independently, or draw on a first-letter cue for minimal assist, a printed word cue for moderate assist, or a full verbal model for maximal assist. This mirrors how the brain re-routes — image → concept activation → partial cue → full word — rebuilding the pathway in graded steps rather than demanding the whole leap at once.
